Description

Managing multimedia semantics is a complex task because content creators and archivists describe and interpret semantics associated with the multimedia content in several ways, depending on the context and use of the information. Disciplines such as computer vision and pattern recognition, multimedia database management and modeling, and film theory and semiotics have contributed ideas, theories and techniques for managing multimedia semantics.

Managing Multimedia Semantics effectively ties together current approaches and future trends in managing multimedia semantics. In one comprehensive volume, this book assembles research problems, theoretical frameworks, tools and technologies required for designing multimedia information systems. Managing Multimedia Semantics is aimed at researchers and practitioners involved in designing and managing complex multimedia information systems. It also serves as a reference text for graduate students taking a course in designing multimedia information systems.

Reviews and Testimonials

Managing Multi-media Semantics gives a comprehensive account of the field of modeling, representing and managing multi-media [content]. It describes the theoretical frameworks, tools, techniques and research problems deeply enough to be great value to a professional in the field. The explicit structure of the book and the quality of the individually contributed chapters also make it accessible to scientists from other disciplines who want to gain an understanding of the field.

Author's/Editor's Biography

Uma Srinivasan (Ed.)
Dr. Uma Srinivasan is a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO’s ICT Centre. She conducts research, provides expert knowledge in designing heterogeneous and multimedia information systems, and is involved in developing new approaches to delivering multimedia applications over the Internet and mobile devices. She works with industry and commercial partners, and provides consultancies for developing innovative multimedia applications. She was an active member of the International MPEG-7 community, which is developing multimedia description schemes for video content description, management and delivery. She serves as a reviewer and member of technical program and organizing committees for leading national and international conferences on multimedia information systems. She has several publications in the areas of video information systems and heterogeneous database integration. She also serves as visiting faculty at the University of Sydney and University of Western Sydney. She did her Masters degrees in Physics and Computer Science from India and holds a Ph.D. from University of New South Wales, Australia.

Surya Nepal (Ed.)
Dr. Surya Nepal is a Senior Research Scientist working on a consistency management in long running web service transactions project at CSIRO ICT Centre. His main research interest is in the development and implementation of algorithms and frameworks for multimedia data management and delivery. He obtained his BE from Regional Engineering college, Surat, India, ME from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand and Ph.D. from RMIT University, Australia. At CSIRO Surya undertook research into content-management problems faced by large collections of images and videos. His main interests are on high-level event detection and processing. He has worked in the areas of content-based image retrieval, query processing in multimedia databases, event detection in sports video, and spatio-temporal modelling and querying video databases. He has several papers in these areas to his credit.
