Innocent Chiluwa

Innocent Chiluwa is a Professor in Language (discourse analysis) and Media/Digital Communications and Head, Department of Languages & General Studies, Covenant University, OTA, (Nigeria). He is a Research Fellow and Digital Expert of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) (Bonn) and a visiting Professor in the Department of English, University of Freiburg, Freiburg im.br. Germany. He obtained a PhD in English and Communication/Media Studies from the University of Ibadan (Nigeria) in 2005 and was a post-doctoral research scholar of the AvH at the University of Freiburg, Germany (2009/10). His research interests are (critical) discourse analysis and linguistic pragmatics focusing on the study of conflict discourse in the media and computer-mediated communications, especially discourses produced by minority groups, terrorist organizations, and militant/secessionist groups in the form of resistance, protest or activism. Digital communications that show evidence of threats, linguistic violence or hate speech are of particular interest. He is also interested in the investigation of ideology, stance, identity, and deception in political, religious and cultural discourses. He has published scholarly articles in reputable international journals such as Discourse & Society (Sage), Discourse Studies (Sage), Discourse & Communication (Sage), Journal of Multicultural Discourses (Routledge), Journal of Language and Politics (John Benjamins), Pragmatics and Society (John Benjamins), Africa Today (Indiana), Journal of Asian and African Studies (Sage), Studies in Conflict and Terrorism (Taylor & Francis) etc. He is the author of Labeling and Ideology in the Press (Peter Lang), and Language in the News: mediating sociopolitical crises in Nigeria (Peter Lang). He is co-editor, Computer-Mediated Discourse in Africa (Nova) and lead editor, Pragmatics of Nigerian English in Digital Discourse (Lincom). He is the editor of Covenant Journal of Language Studies (CJLS), an international open access journal.
