Luis Vergara

Prof. Luis Vergara received the Ingeniero de Telecomunicación and the Doctor Ingeniero de Telecomunicación degrees from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in 1980 and 1983 respectively. Until 1992 he worked at the Departamento de Señales, Sistemas y Radiocomunicaciones (UPM) as an Associate Professor. In 1992 he joined the Departamento de Comunicaciones (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia UPV, Spain), where he became Professor and where it was Department Head until April 2004. From April 2004 to April 2005 he was Vicerector of New Technologies at the UPV. He has been coordinator of the Information Technology area at the spanish National Agence for Evaluation and Prospective (1996-99). He is now responsible of the Signal Processing Group of the UPV, a member group of the Institute of Telecommunication and Multimedia Applications (I-TEAM) of UPV. His research lines concentrate in the digital signal processing, more in paticular in statistical signal processing. Currently, his main interests are in algorithms for the detection and classification of events, including fusion of detectors and classifiers. Those algorithms are applied in very diverse problems like quality control in industrial processing, acoustic monitoring, infrared and video surveillance, biomedics, and fraud detection in credit cards. He has published 52 papers in journals indexed in JCR, 5 book chapters in international publishers and more than 130 international conference papers. He is co-author of 6 patents and has supervised 14 PhD theses. He has participated in a large number of projects and industry contracts, both at national and international levels.
