Rick Edgeman

Rick Edgeman is Shingo Institute Research Director & Professor of Management in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. The Shingo Institute is home of the Shingo Prize, a global excellence award widely considered to be the “Nobel Prize for Manufacturing” that has expanded its scope beyond manufacturing. Concurrently he is also Professor of Quality Management in the Quality Sciences Division at Uppsala University (Sweden); Professor of Sustainability & Enterprise Performance in the Business Development & Technology Department at Aarhus University (Denmark); and Visiting EMBA Professor of Lean Six Sigma at the University of Lugano (Switzerland). He is also a Six Sigma Black Belt. Prior posts spanned schools of business, engineering and science and include QUEST Professor & QUEST Honors Program Executive Director in the Robert H. Smith School of Business and A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland; Professor of Computer Information Systems & Director of the Center for Quality & Productivity Improvement (CQPI) at Colorado State University; and Statistical Science Department Professor & Chair and Adjunct Professor of Business & Economics at the University of Idaho. Rick’s expertise resides in Sustainable Enterprise Excellence, Six Sigma Innovation & Design, Quality Management, and Social-Ecological Innovation. He co-chaired the Performance Management Association Global Conference co-hosted by Cambridge University and Aarhus University in June 2014 & chaired the ‘Sustainable Enterprise Excellence, Innovation & Intellectual Capital’ track at the 5th European Conference on Intellectual Capital while also providing the keynote for the May 2015 IBIMA Conference on “Innovation Vision 2020: from Regional Development Sustainability to Global Economic Growth” in Amsterdam, Holland. Keynotes & invited lectures include deliveries at Oxford University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, on behalf of the National Science Foundation, and at the Shingo European Summit. Globally, he is one of only six academics selected for inclusion among 21 Voices of Quality for the 21st Century (American Society for Quality: 2000). Rick’s research spans sustainability, enterprise excellence, quality management, social-ecological innovation & entrepreneurship, six sigma innovation & design, and statistics for quality & reliability engineering – appearing in such journals as Business Strategy & the Environment, Corporate Governance, Communications of the ACM, Total Quality Management & Business Excellence, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality Progress, International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management, The TQM Journal, Journal of Management Systems, Leadership and Organizational Development Journal, and The American Statistician. He was Co-editor of Measuring Business Excellence and is Associate Editor of Total Quality Management & Business Excellence. He serves or has served on the Editorial Review Boards of The Six Sigma Forum, Quality Engineering, International Journal of Product Development, International Journal of Manufacturing Technology & Management, International Journal of Business Performance Management, International Journal of Society Systems Science, International Journal of Six Sigma & Competitive Advantage, and the Business & Entrepreneurship Journal.
