Description

Self-Organization and Green Applications in Cognitive Radio Networks provides recent research on the developments of efficient cognitive network topology. The most current procedures and results are presented to demonstrate how developments in this area can reduce complications, confusion, and even costs. The book also identifies future challenges that are predicted to arrive in the Cognitive Radio Network along with potential solutions. This innovative publication is unique because it suggests green, energy efficient and cost efficient resolutions to the inevitable challenges in the network.

Reviews and Testimonials

In a cycle of sensing, learning, and adapting, cognitive radio can jump between channels according to temporal and spatial opportunities and so, at least in the near term, alleviate congestion in the scarce spectrum. Here electrical engineers present advanced research results into cognitive networks that combine network architectural design with the necessary technical modifications to deliver high quality services. The instruction manual provides practicing engineers with immediate solutions that incorporate new concepts and techniques. Among the topics are the iterative optimization of energy detector sensing time and periodic sensing interval, a novel spectrum sensing scheduling algorithm, and the secondary use of radio spectrum by high altitude platforms.

Author's/Editor's Biography

Anwer Al-Dulaimi (Ed.)
Anwer Al-Dulaimi obtained his PhD degree in Cognitive LTE Radio Systems in 2012 from Brunel University, London, UK after being awarded BSc and MSc honours degrees in Telecommunication Engineering. Prior to this he worked as a laboratory assistant and assistant lecturer in many universities were he taught many courses in communications and electronics engineering. He worked also as a technical manager for the Canadian Chambers of Trade and Technology Federation. His research interests lie in the area of 4G wireless systems with special focus on dynamic spectrum access, adaptive transmission domains, mobility, and alternative routing algorithms that consider the energy savings and information exchange between peer radios. His research has been documented in highquality IEEE publications and has been referenced by USA patents. He is a member in the IEEE1900.5, 7 and SE43 standardization committees for the future Cognitive radio systems. He is a member of the COST Action IC0905 TERRA, European Alliance for Innovation (EAI), and the European Technology Platform (Photonics21). Dr Anwer is a reviewer for many IEEE journals and conferences. Besides being a member in the IEEE and the IET, he was recognised as a Charted Engineer (CEng) in April 2010 and Associate Practitioner (AHEA) of the British Higher Education Academy in 2012.

John Cosmas (Ed.)
John Cosmas received his BEng in Electronic Engineering at Liverpool University, UK in 1978 and a PhD in Image Processing at Imperial College, University of London, UK in 1986. He worked for five years in industry first with Tube Investments and then with Fairchild Camera and Instruments. After completing his PhD, he worked for 13 years as a lecturer in digital systems and telecommunications at Queen Mary College, University of London. Since 1999, he has worked for Brunel University, first as a reader and then in 2002 as a Professor of multimedia systems. He is currently the director of the Wireless Networks and Communications Centre (WNCC) at Brunel University, London, UK. His current research interests are communications systems, and mobile systems. Prof. Cosmas currently serves as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. He also contributes to the Digital TV Group’s “Mobile Applications” sub-group and to the Digital Video Broadcast’s Technical Module: Converged Broadcast and Mobile Services (CBMS).

Abbas Mohammed (Ed.)
Abbas Mohammed is a Professor of Telecommunications Theory at the School of Engineering, Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), Sweden. He was awarded the PhD degree from Liverpool University, UK, in 1992 and the Swedish Docent degree in Radio Communications and Navigation from BTH in 2001. He is the recipient of the Blekinge Research Foundation Award "Researcher of the Year Award and Prize" for 2006. From 1993 to 1996, he was a Research Fellow with the Radio Navigation Group, University of Wales (Bangor), UK. From 1996 to 1998, he was with the University of Newcastle, UK, working on a European collaborative project within the ACTS (Advance Communications Technologies and Services) FP4 Research Programme that investigated 3G Satellite-UMTS systems. He was also employed by Ericsson AB, where he consulted on power control standardization issues for 3G mobile communication systems. He has been a visiting lecturer to several universities. He is a Fellow of The Institution of Electrical Engineering since 2004. In 2006 he received Fellowship of the UK's Royal Institute of Navigation "in recognition of his significant contribution in navigation and in particular to advanced signal processing techniques that have enhanced the capability of Loran-C". He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Life Member of the International Loran Association, USA. He is the Editor-in-Chief of ACEEE International Journal on Communication (USA) and the Journal of Selected Areas in Telecommunications of Cyber journals (Canada). He is a Board Member of the IEEE Signal Processing Swedish Chapter since its inception in 2000, and the UK’s IET Teknologia Journal to promote the research from the Middle East/North Africa region. He is an Associate Editor to the International Journal of Navigation and Observation and the Mediterranean Journal of Electronics and Communications, and a former Editorial Board Member of the Radio Engineering Journal. He has also been a Guest Lead Editor for several special issues of international journals. He is the author of over 200 publications, including many invited articles in peer reviewed Journals special issues and over 25 book chapters, in the fields of telecommunications, navigation systems and signal processing. He has also developed techniques for measuring skywave delays in Loran-C receivers and received a Best Paper Award from the International Loran Association, USA, in connection to this work. He is the Swedish representative and member of the management committee to the European Community COST 280, 296, 297, IC0802, IC0902 and IC1102 Projects. From 2002-2010, he is the BTH Director of the Graduate School of Telecommunications (a collaborative consortium in research and education between 4 Swedish universities), chaired by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Professor Mohammed's research interests are in space-time signal processing and MIMO systems, channel modelling, antennas and propagation, satellite and high altitude platform communications, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access, and radio navigation systems.
