Ray Gutierrez Jr.
Ray J. Gutierrez
is a communications management graduate student at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He has over a decade of experience as a documentary director and creative multimedia producer, managing international teams on animated series, films, and media campaigns. Ray's passion for exploring how emerging technologies can overcome communication barriers across cultures sparked during a study abroad program in Thailand. As an undergraduate, his cross-cultural experiences in India and an internship with Internews in Thailand exposed him to the power of digital media in empowering marginalized communities. For his work on social impact campaigns, Ray earned the honor of “Citizen of the World” from the University of California system. At USC, Ray's academic research focuses on employing A.I. and machine learning to improve cross-cultural communication and dismantle language barriers globally. He has contributed chapters on the societal impacts of emerging tech to edited volumes such as “Redefining Journalism in an Age of Technological Advancements, Changing Demographics and Social Issues.” Ray is actively expanding his Thai language abilities and cultural knowledge in preparation for a proposed Fulbright project in Thailand. This field research aims to develop AI-powered translation and interpretation tools tailored to Thai linguistic and cultural contexts through partnerships with local universities. Ray's technology expertise and project management skills position him well to lead this collaborative initiative. With a diverse professional background paired with a passion for socially conscious technology innovation, Ray aspires to become a research consultant advancing cutting-edge applications of A.I. and machine learning to promote cross-cultural understanding worldwide.
