Fernando Martin-Sanchez

Fernando Martin-Sanchez, PhD, is a Biomedical Informatics scientist with a career developed across the US, Spain and Australia. He was the CIO of the National Institute of Health Carlos III (Spain) from 1993-1998. In 1998 he became the Founding Director of its Department of Medical Bioinformatics. In February 2011 hewas appointed Professor and Chair of Health Informatics at the University of Melbourne's Medical School and in 2013 became the inaugural Director of the University’s Health and Biomedical Informatics Centre (HaBIC). In December of 2015 he started as a Faculty member with Weill Cornell Medicine, in New York. His research interests focus on the role of big data and informatics in precision medicine and participatory health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACHI) and the Australasian College of Health Informatics (ACHI). He has served as Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Asocciation (IMIA), as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for MEDINFO 2015 (Sao Paulo) and is currently the Chair of the IMIA Working Group on Data Mining and Big Data Analytics.
