Abstract
This chapter reviews the self-regulatory learning and goal orientation literatures. Findings from these literatures are used to make specific recommendations for the effective design and use of electronic portfolios in order to increase academic learning. Specifically, the authors recommend that electronic portfolios provide the means for students to set learning goals, monitor and regulate their progress toward these goals, as well as develop their self-assessment skills. Additionally, they suggest that these goals be focused on learning objectives rather than performance objectives.
