Network Coding for Multimedia Communications
Abstract
Network Coding (NC) is an innovative technique that can achieve the maximum information flow in a network by allowing nodes to combine received packets before retransmission. This chapter provides an overview of the joint use of NC and a set of current multimedia techniques that have shown promising results compared to traditional approaches. The applications range from distributed storage, content distribution with scalable coding, multiple description coding in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks, to the applications in wireless networks and the recent trends in cross-layer optimization.
