Abstract
Following a survey that we conducted to determine the information demands of physicians, it turned out, that medical guidelines are regarded as an important instrument of quality management. As many physicians lack adequate guideline knowledge, we developed a solution approach towards a process-oriented implementation of medical guidelines. We argument, that a successful implementation requires the embedding of guideline content directly into medical and clinical information systems. First, physicians would more likely consider guideline information if it’s part of the system, they are accustomed to working with. Second, data stored in information systems can be used to present guideline content according to the physicians’ needs. Third, the integration facilitates a guideline-compliant medical documentation. Therefore, we discuss several integration methods, that can be used alternatively or be combined to achieve a holistic solution.
