Parental Empowerment: Development and Implementation of Institutional Change in Multicultural Contexts
Abstract
This chapter discusses parental empowerment through studying the development and implementation of institutional change in multicultural contexts. Paulo Freire argues that the democratization of educational institutions requires the active participation and engagement of parents, especially from marginalized and economically oppressed populations. School-family partnership is the most crucial component contributing to students' learning and success in school. The chapter further identifies the issues and challenges to parental engagement. It discusses how parents and schools can work together to promote students' learning outcomes by presenting various parent engagement models.
