Asmat Ali

Asmat Ali is PhD in Remote Sensing & GIS. He is Director of Cartography and GIS at Survey of Pakistan. He is also Project Director Feasibility Study for Establishment of National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) for Pakistan. In, 1998 he earned Professional Master Degree in Geoinformatics from Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, Enschede The Netherlands. The title of his IFA was, “DIGITAL PRODUCTION LINE IN THE CONTEXT OF SURVEY OF PAKISTAN”. Later on, he got MSc Degree in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, with Specialization in Geo-Information Management from the same university. The title of his MSc thesis was, “POTENTIAL OF PUBIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP FOR NSDI IMPLEMENTATION IN PAKISTAN”. In 2022, he got PhD degree in Remote Sensing and GIS from PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The title of his dissertation was “SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE AS THE MEANS TO ASSEMBLE GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR EFFECTIVE AGRICULTURAL POLICIES IN PAKISTAN”. He has 35 years of experience in geospatial information production and management discipline as practitioner, trainer and educator. He has served on several operational, administrative and instructional appointments. He was in-charge of the team which started GIS mapping and digital cartography at Survey of Pakistan in 1999. His more than 30 research papers including four book chapters and articles on Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), GIS, Remote Sensing, E-governance, as well as Land Administration have been published in various internationally renowned journals and conferences. In 2008, SDI Asia-Pacific identified him as FOCAL POINT FOR SDI DEVELOPMENT IN PAKISTAN. GSDI in 2016, acknowledged and awarded him as SDI IMPLEMENTER FROM PAKISTAN. He is on the visiting faculty of Bahria University Islamabad and PMAS- Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
