Dean Kyne

Dr. Dean Kyne has served as an Associate Professor and the Disaster Studies Program Director in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) since August 2019. Since 2017, Dr. Kyne has served as editor-in-chief for the International Journal of Disaster Response Management. He also served as guest editor for the Special Issue "Disaster Management and Geospatial information," published in the International Journal of Geo-Information. Before joining the UTRGV, he worked as a research director at the Maricopa County Government in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, he also worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. Dr. Kyne received his Ph.D. in Environmental Social Science from Arizona State University in 2014, a Master of Professional Studies in Environmental Resources Management and Policy from Cornell University in 2009, and a Master of Public Administration in Public Policy from the Pennsylvania State University in 2008. He also received a Post Doctorate in International Disaster Management from Karlsruhe University, Germany, and a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Arizona State University. He has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, including Disaster and Society, Disaster Resiliency and Sustainability, Environmental Sociology, GIS for Disaster Management, GIS for Social Sciences, and Research Capstone.
