Elbert Hawkins III
Elbert "Jay" Hawkins, III,
is a psychotherapist, educator, and former school counselor for over 20 years, working with children and young adults. He holds a B.A. degree in History and a minor in Cultural Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), a B.S. degree in Counselor Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Studies-Cultural Foundations from UNCG. As a therapist and educator, he provides safe spaces for exploration, experiential learning, and discovery for all children and young adults. His philosophy of education and therapy centers on an African Proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." Collectivism and being a part of the whole, he believes and understands, enables people to connect and thrive in healthy and righteous ways. His written work and interests in social justice learning and education, affinity groups, and mentoring programs and platforms also center African-American children and young adults as public intellectuals, particularly African-American males.
