Leonidas Vatikiotis

Leonidas Vatikiotis was born in Piraeus in 1968. He studied Statistics at the University of Piraeus. His doctoral dissertation, at the Sociology Department of Panteion University of Athens (2008) considered the causes of the 1970s economic crisis was graded with full marks “excellent”. He is a scientific personnel in the Institute of Small Enterprises of Greece. He is teaching Journalism studies in the faculty of Communications and New Journalism of the Open University of Cyprus, as also as Economics of Innovation in the University of Peloponnese. Since 1991, is working as journalist specializing in foreign affairs and economy. He has worked in the following media outlets: Epikaira, Nea Selida, Paron, Diplomacy, Imerissia and Prin, Nexus, et.al. The last 4 years is chief editor in the web page Dimosiografia.com (it means journalism) which cooperates with the american Columbia Journalism Review. He has worked too as commentator in Greek TV news. His articles are reproduced widely in various Greek media. He had the scientific supervision of many economic and social documentaries. Among them: • Traces (2018) of Advanced Media Institute which refers to the missing persons of Cyprus, after the Turkish invasion of 1973. • Debtocracy of Aris Chatzistefanou (2011) which refers to the sovereign debt crisis of Greece. • Catastroika (2014) of the same journalists which refers to the privatization plan that has been imposed by Troika. • Fascism SA, (2013) which refers to the rise of Golden Dawn • This is not a Coup (2016) which reveals ECB ‘s and EU’s violations of democracy. This is not a Coup was awarded as the best documentary in the National Greek Documentary Festival of Chalkida. • On 2013 and 2017, respectively, had the scientific supervision of the film Crossed Lives and Elegy of Underdevelopment of Spyros Teskos. He has presented scientific papers and lectured as invited speaker in Berlin, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, London, Rome, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Brussels, Bologna University, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Cuba, etc. Contributions of his own have been published in more than 40 books in Greece and abroad. He speaks English and Spanish. He has translated to Greek the following books: Ian Gough, The political Economy of the Welfare state (Macmillan); John Martinussen, Society, State and Market, A Guide to Competing Theories of Development (Zed Books); The Routledge Dictionary of Twentieth Century Political Thinkers, ed. by Robert Benewick and Philip Green (Routledge). He has participated in the following research groups: Institute of Small Enterprises (Greece), Advanced Media Institute (Cyprus), Transnational Institute – TNI (Holland), FIAN (Germany), Call for Financial Justice (Belgium) and Research on Money and Finance (SOAS University of London). In December of 2011 he completed a course at UN (UNITAR) about the audit of public debt. On 2015 participated in Truth Committee of Greek Parliament as long as others scientists from Greece and aboard which searched the legality of Greek sovereign debt. He has been elected six times (2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019) at the administration of the Economic Chamber of Greece.
