Md. Shafiqul Islam

Md. Shafiqul Islam specializes in sustainable development issues including sustainable waste management, e-waste management, waste management principles and value creation, environmental hazard & disaster management, organic farming with particular expertise on tea garden, NGOs and civil society. Other interests include rural development, livelihood, food security, humanitarian assistance, maternal & child health and nutrition, organizational issues in development agencies, and bottom up approaches of development. An Environmentalist by education and doing, he has conducted extensive field research in cross range of field including climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, ecological resilience, and has advised and consulted for a wide range of national international development agencies, universities NGOs and private sectors. Shafiqul Islam is an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology. He is a specialist on Disaster Management, with a regional focus on Drought in Barind Tract in Bangladesh. Dr. Islam has published widely on the Climate Change Adaptation. His recent work includes Cultivation and Drought Management in Agriculture (Springer Nature, 2022). His two chapters published in two renowned books from IGI Global. After studying in Chittagong University, Shafiqul Islam was awarded a doctorate in Sustainable Approaches to Drought Management: Exploratory Study on selected regions of Northwest in Bangladesh’ from the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK and conducted a research on “Exploring Social Ecological Resilience of Fisher Folks to Coastal Disasters”. He worked for 13 years with WB DFID, USAID, EU, GWAB, NETZ, DanChurchAid and ADD funded projects for research, collaboration, partnership, implementation, network linkages and dissemination. He returned to academia as an Assistant Professor at the Center for Sustainable Development in the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh in 2010. Dr Islam is a Forester with broad interests in the ecology, silviculture, and conservation of biodiversity. He was a semester Faculty at the United International University in 2019. He was the Associate Professor and Chairman at the Department of Environmental Science (Graduate Program) in State University of Bangladesh from 2019-2022. He supervised more than 80 Master’s student theses as the major Professor from 2019 to 2022. After receiving his doctoral degree in Disaster Management from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His expertise includes community-based disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, and disaster and environmental education. Prof. Islam has published more than 50 academic papers and book chapters. Dr. Islam has been involved in research in the areas of gender, disasters, environment, climate change, education, social inclusion, indigenous community and other areas of social development since the late nineties.
