Richard Lakeman

Richard Lakeman is a mental health nurse, psychotherapist and consultant in private practice. He is an associate professor at Southern Cross University (Australia) and holds an adjunct associate professor position at Edith Cowan University. He presently co-ordinates a masters programme in mental health and mental health nursing. Richard has over 30 years of experience working in public sector mental health services, non-government organisations and in private practice in New Zealand, Australia and Ireland. Richard has numerous academic qualifications including a diploma of nursing, bachelor of nursing, bachelor of arts with honours (exploring how people cope with voices), a masters in mental health (psychotherapy), and a doctorate focused on mental health recovery. Richard is presently a student of family therapy and has further credentials in EMDR. His clinical focus has been on working with people with the most complex needs including those experiencing homelessness and disengagement from helping services. He is passionate about promoting psychotherapeutic skill development in all professionals working in the field. He has published over 100 original papers, and numerous book chapters, and delivered many workshops and presentations relating to psychotherapy and mental health, He presently lives in regional NSW and provides psychotherapy, clinical supervision and complex case consultation online.
