Shartriya Collier

Dr. Shartriya Collier is currently Associate Dean of the School of Education at Nevada State College. She is a new arrival and excited to continue her life mission of “transforming the world, one mind at a time”. Prior to her new position, Dr. Collier-Stewart was Professor in the Department of Elementary Education at California State University, Northridge where she instructed courses related to bilingual education, English language learners, literacy development, and multicultural education. Dr. Collier also taught courses in the Linguistics Department specifically focused upon TESOL methods, language, gender, identity, and multiple literacies. During her tenure at CSUN she served in several leadership roles including serving as Director of the LA Times Literacy Center, MA Program Coordinator, Chair of the College Curriculum Committee and Co-PI of the Future Male Minority Teachers Grant. She has been an educator for over 15 years. Ms. Collier has taught a variety of grades ranging from teaching first grade in Honduras, Central America to teaching creative writing to high school students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her B.A. in Spanish from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shartriya received her Master's degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She completed her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Collier has published widely in various academic journals such as the Bilingual Research Journal, Teachers College Record, Multicultural Education, Journal for Multicultural Education, The Journal of Writing Teacher Education and the CITE Journal. Her research interests include immigrant women entrepreneurs, biliteracy development, immigrant family literacy, language arts and the writing workshop in ELL classrooms.
