Simbayi Yafele

Simbayi Yafele , is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics (LanCSAL) at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. His PhD in Applied Language and Literacy Education from Wits University combined applied linguistics, literacy, and education specialisations. He is theoretically grounded in translanguaging (fluidly using more than one language for pedagogy), and his research centres on working with literacies and inclusive literacy pedagogies for multilingual education contexts and social justice. His research areas thus include translanguaging, multilingual education, and academic literacies. His work has explored academic reading development and epistemic access for marginalised bi/multilingual learners at 1st-year university levels. His interest is in inclusive, fluidly multilingual literacy pedagogy, which draws on students' literacies from their communities and applies them to the classroom and educational contexts.
