Description

Image and signal processing techniques are receiving increasing interest because of their numerous real-world applications. Data is now available in different forms, different wavelengths, and even in different dimensions, creating the need for novel multidisciplinary solutions for automated data processing and analysis.

Applied Signal and Image Processing: Multidisciplinary Advancements highlights the growing multidisciplinary nature of signal and image processing by focusing on emerging applications and recent advances in well-established fields. This book covers state-or-the-art applications in both signal and image processing, which include optical communication and sensing, wireless communication management, face recognition and facial imaging, solar imaging and feature detection, fractal analysis, and video processing.



Preface

Image and signal processing techniques are receiving increasing interest because of their different applications in our daily life. We live in a world that is becoming more and more data rich. Today’s data is available in different forms (e.g. textual, visual, audio, etc) and in different wavelengths (e.g., x-rays, infra-red, radio, microwave, optical, etc) and even in different dimensions (e.g., 1-D textual and audio, 2-D images and videos, 3-D Graphics, etc.). This creates the need for novel multidisciplinary solutions for automated data processing and analysis, data associations, knowledge extraction, representation of spatial relations, time-based analysis, et cetera.

This inspired us to edit a book that highlights the growing multi-disciplinary nature of signal and image processing by focusing on some of the emerging applications and some of the recent advances in well-established fields. This book covers different state-of-the-art applications in both signal and image processing. The signal processing applications include recent advances in: optical communication and sensing, minimising interference signals in long range navigation receivers, suppression of electromagnetic fields, wireless communication management, broadband access equalisation, electronic nose, spectrometry, non-destructive testing, and application of the new low frequency array. The image processing applications include recent trends in: face recognition and facial imaging, solar imaging and feature detection, fractal analysis, real-time imaging, corneal imaging, video processing, 3-D reconstruction and Arabic optical character recognition. This book will also cover the state-of-the-art in the investigated topics and will identify open research problems that need to be resolved along with some future research directions.

Author's/Editor's Biography

Rami Qahwaji (Ed.)

Rami Qahwaji is a Reader in Visual Computing at the School of Computing, Informatics and Media at Bradford University (UK). Dr. Qahwaji received a first class BSc honours degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by an MSc in Control and Computer Engineering, and a PhD in Computer Vision Systems in 2002 from the University of Bradford. He is the principal investigator 2 major EPSRC grants (EP/F022948/1) and (GR/T17588/01) and also involved in 2 small EPSRC grants. He has done consultancy work for Hines Engineering Ltd, which was funded by Yorkshire Forward. He is also involved in research activities funded by the EU COST action ES0803, where he is the work package (WP) manager for WP142, and by the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) (Bern, Switzerland). He has around 85 refereed publications including 2 edited books, 8 book chapters and 25 journal papers. In addition, he has around 32 invited talks and conference presentations and 11 PhD completions. He is Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a member of various professional organisations, and has refereed research proposals for different national and international grant awarding bodies. He is also a reviewer for several international journals and conferences and he is the conference Co-Chair for the International Conference on Cyberworlds 2009 (UK) and also (CSAA09) (Egypt).



Roger Green (Ed.)

Roger Green received a BSc in Electronics from UMIST, Manchester University, and a PhD in Video Communications from Bradford University, and then a DSc in Photonic Communications, Systems and Devices from the University of Warwick. His research interests are very wide, including photonic systems, communications, signal processing, and optoelectronics. He is a Fellow of the IET, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He currently holds the Chair in Electronic Communication Systems at the University of Warwick, and is a member of the EPSRC College.



Evor Hines (Ed.)
Evor L. Hines joined the School of Engineering at Warwick in 1984. He was promoted to Reader in 2005 and to a personal chair in 2009. He obtained his DSc (Warwick) in 2007 and is a Fellow of both the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Higher Education Academy, in addition to being a Chartered Engineer. His main research interest is concerned with intelligent systems and their applications. Most of the work has focused on artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, neurofuzzy systems and genetic programming. Typical application areas include, inter alia, intelligent sensors such as the electronic nose, medicine, non-destructive testing, computer vision, and telecommunications. He has co-authored in excess of 230 articles and supervised over 30 research students in addition to currently leading the Information and Communication Technologies Research Group in the School of Engineering.
