Abstract

This chapter presents principles for integrating generative AI software into research-based instructional frameworks for teaching writing. The chapter is organized into four sections: (1) a research-based discussion on the current state of writing instruction and how writing instruction has shifted with the onset of generative AI; (2) a description of three guiding principles for integrating AI software into writing instruction; (3) a rationale for selecting instructional frameworks; and (4) concrete examples of how to integrate AI software into each of the instructional frameworks for teaching writing.
