Abstract

The act of writing is multifaceted. Therefore, so is teaching writing. Elementary educators face challenges when implementing effective writing instruction because elementary students possess literacy skills ranging from emergent to skillful. This review illuminates just how complex it is to teach writing in elementary contexts. It uses complexity theory in writing to organize and contemplate the varying pieces that go into teaching elementary writing. This essay is meant to help administrators, curricular specialists, and instructional coaches understand the complexities and nuances that elementary teachers encounter. Additionally, it can provide specific elements that can be used for feedback or design professional development.
