Abstract

Microaggressions are commonly encountered in the clinical learning environment. Although microaggressions may be subtle and/or unintentional, it has been well established that microaggressions can have significant negative impacts on healthcare workers, patients, and patient care, contributing to health inequities. Microaggressions are difficult to address in the clinical learning environment for many reasons. This chapter will provide health professions educators with a framework to effectively teach learners how to recognize and address microaggressions in the clinical learning environment in a non-accusatory way that will build relationships. It will also discuss common barriers to addressing microaggressions in medicine and provide potential solutions.
