Abstract

A light review of historical practices can provide what some may consider a superficial evolution of higher education and its practices. Specifically, in the field of health professions, a shift that is easily identifiable is the move from black and white photos of white male physicians in coats and nurses in starched white dresses to a more diversified student body adorned with white coats. However, are the current systems in place supportive of the individual needs and beliefs of these students or are students inadvertently being required to alter who they are to fit into systems not supportive of their individuality, especially as it relates to their religious beliefs? How do we undo the practices of a one-size-fits-all approach to educating students and move towards a goal of inclusivity for all faiths by providing students educational environments and curriculums purposefully designed to support students of different religions?
