Abstract

Encouraging International students, particularly those with poor English proficiency, to participate fully in university classes has long been recognized as a major challenge. This paper reports on a study into addressing this issue within the context of Information Technology. The researchers interviewed 20 academics from a Faculty of Information Technology at an Australian University as well as conducting focus groups of 36 Local and International students. A number of cultural and language factors were identified and several strategies for improving class participation by International students were suggested.
